RFC: My Account or Preferences?

In FeedLounge, there is a link titled ‘My Account’ which pops up a window that shows your account details and preferences (currently only one, but more are being added).

From the feedback received in the forums so far, I think people are not thinking to look in ‘My Account’ for options or preference settings. Would titling this link ‘Preferences’ or ‘Options’ would make you more likely to click on it when looking for various options? Perhaps another term?

  1. Well, ‘My Account’ is well for me, but I think that ‘Preferences’ is better because is a term used more often…

  2. I think “Preferences” is the way to go.

  3. While I do not have an account yet :( I would say something like Preferences, Options, or even Settings would be better. Personally, I normally don’t associate account details and preferences together. Finding account details while on the preferences page is fine, but using something like My Account as the link title, doesn’t seem to work well for me.

While it may be too much clutter, I really think you need two buttons. “My Account” and “Options/Prefs.” The reason being, the inverse of your problem is also true: I wouldn’t think to look in “Preferences” to change my e-mail address or what not.

In my opinion, display options and account settings contain totally different items. Keep ‘em seperated yet make ‘em easy to find.

Well, I would lean towards ‘Preferences’. If ‘Options’ is the way to go, I think it needs a prefix. Maybe ‘Account Options’ or ‘User Options’?

The main problem I see is distinguishing between system-wide prefs and specific feed prefs. I notice you currently use ‘Feed Info’ for the latter, so maybe ‘Account Info’? (Though I still prefer ‘Preferences’ or ‘Options’, and the same for both actually.)

On a somewhat unrelated note, when are you going to be in need of more alpha testers?!? Or open the beta? I’m so ready to use Feedlounge it hurts. 2+ hours a day in Bloglines is not fun anymore. I’m actually cutting back on my time reading because the interface is getting in my way too much.

  7. I say Preferences. My Account, to me, only means username, password or contact email, not the actual options.

‘Preferences’ would be ideal IMHO. ‘Settings’ is another idea, though I prefer the former.

  9. “Preferences” seems to be a better way to go. “My Account” seems like it would only have prima facie information, not a full set of preferences/options.

For me, things like passwords, email address and other contact info are really part of “My Account”. Things like color theme, screen layout and font size are part of “Preferences”. And both “My Account” and “Preferences” are part of “Settings”. So I would name the main link “Settings”, with an “Account” section and a “Preferences” section(s). This is what GMail does and I find it pretty intuitive.

  11. I’d vote for something like what Pascal mentions. I don’t like the idea of mixing them under one heading though. To me they are quite different things and mixing them wouldn’t feel right.

Definitely, “Preference” and/or “Options”. I would think to go to “My Account” to change my email address or password, not change the look/behavior of a program.

  13. Agree with Chris and Pascal. Have two choices: Preferences and My Account. Unlike Pascal, I think two headers would be better than putting both under one heading.

I definitely agree that having two links one to account info, and the other to preferences.
