Update: 2006-01-27
In my attempts yesterday to attempt to more fully comply with Postel’s Law1, I inadvertently prevented updating of all gzip compressed feeds. This includes feeds from sources like FeedBurner, MSDN, even our personal feeds. I apologize for the inconvenience, and the feeds are now updating properly again. This ‘gzip outage’ lasted about 16 hours, before being reported by several people in the forums. (forum thread, forum thread) Item updates should be coming shortly.

Uhoh! I must say, though, that I’m all for compliance with Postel’s Law [even though I’m personally waiting for someone to digg this entry and bring out all the “I hate Mark Pilgrim, he’s a fucktard who closed his Weblog and shits on Apple’s RSS efforts” zombies.

I will stand up and say I am pro-Pilgrim, and can also say that is the only pragmatic way to deal with “the real world”.
Building a product, if FeedLounge didn’t show 1/2 of your feeds because the XML wasn’t well formed, we would be roasted by the same people bashing Pilgrim. So, disagreeing is the only way I can go, as the product is expected to handle all of these situations.
FWIW, I was for the “Vision of XML”, but realistically, the “real world” and the “Vision of XML” clash like peanut butter and sardines.
We try to inform our users of invalid feeds, in the hopes that one of those users may know the feed owner, and help them to see the light and truth that is the “Vision of XML”. Fact is, most people just don’t care…
