Feature: Resizable Panes

You can now resize all of the panes in the FeedLounge interface. This was only in the middle of the feature voting list, but it had been started a while back so I wanted to finish it up.

This was requested in the forums a long time ago. :)

Note: This did not happen at the expense of the scalability and performance coding that is going on right now. Scott is 100% on the back-end changes that will bring performance back where it should be (he says it’s coming along - thanks for your patience). He’s the back-end guy, I’m the front-end guy. For a brief moment we considered not releasing this feature until the performance changes were ready, but then we realized we’ve got smart users who can understand this stuff. :)

UPDATE: The 3 Hour Tour is still running on a pre-gfmorris version of FeedLounge. Once we get the performance fixes in, we’ll update the Tour to the latest codeline, including this feature.

I implemented resizable panes in FeedLounge this afternoon. Everything went rather smoothly (I’d prototyped it in the San Jose Airport and on the plane last month), until I found one very strange issue in IE.

  2. Hey, nice job. That’s a really neat feature, and done so well. So much better than any clunky frameset solution. It works great.

  3. Thanks Mark.

I originally had it prototyped to resize on the fly, but there was just too much content moving around and it couldn’t all keep up. The “move the bar then resize the panes” approach works much more smoothly.

I also wanted to keep it subtle and unobtrusive, yet easily accessible when you need it. I had little handles as visual cues in my prototype, but they really seemed to junk up the place so I pulled them out.

I guess I’ll find out if it’s too subtle or not. :)

  5. FeedLounge adds resizable panes

FeedLounge has added resizable panes to all of the different views available. This is really cool.
Every time the guys add a new feature, the application feels more and more like a wonderful desktop app - except I can get to it anywhere.
